The T-34 Mentor was the pet project of Walter Beech, who initially developed it as the Beechcraft Model 45 intended to be sold as a cheaper alternative to the North American T-6/SNJ Texan. Created at a time when the defense budget was regulated, the Beechcraft T-34 nevertheless proved what a capable military trainer aircraft it really was. The T-34 Mentor was a propeller-driven, single-engine airframe that was put in use by all services of the U.S. military and remained in service for more than six decades after it was redesigned.
