The X-15 was a rocket-powered research aircraft manufactured in 1950’s by the North American Aviation for the United States Air Force and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The X-15 rocket plane set a new world record in 1960’s for being able to fly 62 miles above the Earth’s sea level. The X-15 plane also holds the current world speed record for being the fastest manned aircraft. Powered by a single liquid-cooled rocket engine, this experimental research aircraft can fly up to a maximum speed of 4,520 mph and have served NASA and USAF for more than a decade.
