The Laird Solution was a conventionally geared biplane with a welded steel fuselage and aircraft fabric covering. The Laird Solution was also called the Laird LC-DW Solution, Laird LC-DW300 Super Solution, and Laird LC-DW500 Super Solution. In 1930 Matty Laird was commissioned to build a racing plane based on the Laird Speedwing for the 1930 Thompson Trophy race. Laird entered the Solution with Charles "Speed" Holman as the pilot and won. A second aircraft was built for the 1931 Bendix Trophy race which it won while being piloted by Jimmy Doolittle.
