Known as “Sandy” to Vietnam veterans, the A-1E Skyraider was highly valued during close-support missions because of its large bomb load capacity and resilience to heavy ground fire. It played a vital role in the Southeast Asia War with its vast and varied armament and the ability to fly and hover over the battlefield at low altitudes for long periods. Equipped with four 20mm cannons, bombs, rockets, mines, grenades, flares and gun pods, the A-1ESkyraider is actually a modified version of the AD-5. Today, it is one of the main attractions at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. While the core mission of all Skyraider squadrons was Close Air Support (CAS), the A-1E Skyraider accomplished other missions, including Search and Rescue (SAR), night interdiction, helicopter escort, and Special Forces support. In all missions, the ability of the Skyraider to effectively deliver a variety of munitions in close proximity to friendly forces was put to good use.
