E-2C Hawkeye 1/80
Scale: 1/80 | Wingspan: 12 inches | Length: 8.65 inches
The E2C Hawkeye is an airborne early warning (AEW) and control aircraft created for the United States Navy. This aircraft is the first to be designed as an AEW from the beginning; other aircraft had modified airframes. As an AEW, the E-2C warns the US Navy of oncoming air threats. Operating at more than 25,000 feet, the Hawkeye feeds threat identity and positional data to available fighter aircraft. The 24-foot in diameter rotating dome on top of the aircraft fuselage carries antennas and radars for relaying information. Aside from its iconic radome, this aircraft also has wings that can be folded hydraulically to press against the fuselage. The Hawkeye and the C-2 Greyhound were the only propeller-driven planes that can take off from and land on aircraft carriers. The aircraft was first flown in January 1971 and the pioneer 55-unit batch, called the Group 0, became operational in 1973.
